Witness to history: pandemic learnings

Updated: May 13

The University of Guelph hosted a witness seminar on COVID-19 pandemic learnings, which Dr. Lawrence Loh attended in spring 2023. (University of Guelph/Facebook)

Last spring, I was honoured to join a witness seminar at the University of Guelph, hosted by Professor Catherine Carstairs, that delved into various lessons learned around the COVID-19 pandemic here in Ontario.

The full transcript of this rich and insightful session is available here.

Over a day of roundtable discussions, I enjoyed the opportunity to dialogue with so many colleagues around their perspectives on the COVID-19 response in Ontario on four themes: pandemic policy making, pandemic communication, long-term care and the elderly, and racial justice and marginalized populations.

I also appreciated the opportunity to put words to paper in reinforcing Peel's pandemic experience, highlighting certain moments and decisions that served as a case study for these various topics--particularly inequities and communications in one of the most diverse places on earth.

The final document, of course, is a verbatim transcript and a lengthy read, but in a world where revisionism by retrospectoscope is rife, I'm hoping that the words here will help advance the discussion and remind us of why things happened when and where they did, with what we had at the time, while also providing fodder for reflection and lessons learned in planning for the future.

Deepest thanks to Amy Greer and Catherine Carstairs for capturing our discussion and our words and to all my fellow participants for their valuable insights and engagement.
